The universe began approximately <1> billion years ago in an explosion named the Big Bang. All of the matter and energy of the universe was concentrated in one very small location with <2> temperature and density. Ever since then the universe has been expanding, cooling, and forming more complicated structures.


The early universe consisted of a hot, dense gas and radiation. Most of the energy of the universe was in the form of <3>. Conversions from matter to radiation and back occurred regularly through the processes of pair producation and annihilation. The universe greatly increased in size in a process called <4> when the 4 fundamental forces separated. Fusion allowed the formation of larger nuclei, but nothing larger than <5> formed since there are no stable nuclie with either 5 or <6> particles. Eventually the universe cooled sufficiently for electrons to become bound to atoms. This event is known as the <7>. Radiation could now travel freely in the universe. We call the radiation released at this time the Microwave Background Radiation.


There are three possibilities for the future of the universe: open, <8>, and closed. If the universe $res it would be termed <9>.
