Tell us more about your work with our NebraskaMATH courses
I currently serve as a collaborating instructor for Nebraska Algebra Cohort 2 and teach courses each summer through the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes. In 2013, I become a Noyce Master Teaching Fellow.
How has your experience been being involved with NebraskaMATH?
Each new course brings with it many new, challenging and exciting experiences. I learn more about teaching as I collaborate with other instructors and participants. I believe I learned more in the workshop this summer than the participants did. As a team of instructors, we have been privileged to observe lesson study activities in action during a visit to Adlai Stevenson and Evanston Township high schools in Chicago. Teaching mathematics can be greatly improved by taking a detailed look at the lesson design and planning process, observing the lesson presentation with detailed data collection followed by a debriefing session that takes a serious look at the lesson from the data collected during the lesson.
Do you remember your favorite teacher?
My favorite teacher was my only high school math teacher, Mr. Roger Gossen. He was a beginning teacher teaching six different courses each day in a small rural Kansas high school. Looking back, I don't know how he was able to do what he did. I have tremendous admiration for teachers who are the math teacher.
What is your favorite thing about teaching?
I enjoy the opportunity to visit with former students and student teachers. It is great to watch them grow and move into their own profession knowing that each of us has a part in helping them write their own story. When students share a story or memory that has impacted them, it usually isn't one that I would think of as being significant. It is a reminder to me that small things are important.
What's on your iPod/iPhone?
Michael W. Smith, David Crowder Band, Matthew West.
What's your favorite TV show?College football.
What is your favorite thing about Nebraska?
The sharing and caring attitude of the people I have been able to associate with. I am humbled as I look around and see what my friends and colleagues do for others every day of the week.
