Welcome to the Center for Science, Mathematics, and Computer Education science outreach website which provides contact and program information about current science outreach efforts at UNL, in Lincoln, and the state of Nebraska.

If you are a parent please use the outreach information below to get your child involved throughout the year in some stimulating activities related to science.

If you are a department, center, organization, etc. the information will help you discover possible programs to partner with or advertise your outreach to others. Partnerships produce more efficient uses of resources, help create dynamic new programs, and overall enhance outreach efforts between faculty researchers, schools, and local and statewide organizations.

Since 1997, the All Girls/All Math summer mathematics camp for high school girls has been offered at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to provide a stimulating and supportive environment for girls to develop their mathematical ability and interest.
ANDRILL's Education and Outreach Program offers several projects and resources for communicating climate change science to a variety of audiences. Through the ANDRILL website, a wide array of activities and resources for classroom teachers and students can be accessed including Project Circle, the Flexhibit, and and C2S2: Climate Change Student Summits.
The event gives high school and transfer students the opportunity to come see what its like to be a real animal science student. They will be sitting in on an actual class, participate in a lab, eat in the dining hall and tour Burr Hall on east campus. We will also be touring Memorial Stadium!
An Astronomy Education Workshop is held annually in early fall and special workshops are held when visiting astronomers are on campus. All high school and college instructors of either physics or astronomy are invited to participate. A recurrent theme in the workshops is the use of instructional technology to improve teaching of astronomy.The workshop has three goals: 1) to acquaint educators with innovative usages of instructional technology in astronomy education, 2) to bring together members of the astronomy and physics teaching community to share ideas and identify potential
collaborators, and 3) to promote new developments in the UNL Department of Physics and Astronomy.
Are you interested in learning more about the exciting career opportunities in Biological Systems Engineering and Agricultural Engineering? If so, E-Day 2010 is for you. Join Engineering faculty and dynamic engineering students on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, East campus, to participate in hands-on activities and view innovative senior design projects in these two exciting majors. High school sophomores, juniors, and senior students are welcome to visit and participate.
Bright Lights, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that for over 20 years has taken summer learning adventures beyond the classroom by providing youth with unique, motivating, hands-on opportunities. Based on the motto, "Hands on, Minds on!", the 2011 program includes one week day camps and one week half-day classes, June 13-17, June 27-July 1, and July 11-15. The main program site is at a LPS building and the remaining classes are held at community classroom sites.

As pollinators, bumble bees play critical roles in agriculture and natural ecosystems. Unfortunately, bee populations have been steadily declining. A team of entomologists lead by Dr. Doug Golick is engaging the community in its pursuit to learn more about native bumble bees.
The event has been organized by Dr. Ken Dewey, High Plains Regional Climate Center, School of Natural Resources, UNL, since 2000. The number of exhibits has increased from five in 1999 to 37 in 2005. National and local experts will be invited to talk about how to better prepare to mitigate injuries and loss of life and property from all forms of severe weather. The exhibitors also provide brochures and handouts that help the public better plan to "survive the storms."
The goals of the chemistry day are:
-Introduce students to the UNL undergraduate program including: clubs, award winning instructors, and scholarship information
-Increase the number of UNL BA and BS Chemistry major
-Get students thinking about the relationship between their degree and their future career
-Introduce opportunities available, specifically graduate and professional schools
Climate Masters of Nebraska is an adult education program which is developed to teach you about climate change and ways to reduce your carbon footprint. It is an action based climate change education program designed for the community. We have list of experts who will speak on various topics such as recycling, home energy, food, renewable energy along with a couple of educational field trips to local farms and landfill. The goal for the training is to educate community about the science of climate change and ways in which they can shrink their carbon footprints in daily life. Program is absolutely FREE for participants.
CSE Day is an event for high-school students who are involved with or interested in Computing, Technology or Mathematics; and who would like to compete in either a programming or design contest. The programming contest is intended for students who have experience with a structured programming language and can form teams of 3 and compete in a 2 1/2 hour contest. The design contest is targeted to students who may or may not have a background in programming, but who are interested in looking at how technology can effect and change our every day lives.
CROP is a statewide outreach project whose goal is to involve Nebraska high school students, teachers, and college undergraduates in a multi-faceted, hands-on research effort to study extended cosmic-ray air showers. The aim of CROP is to develop an expanding set of high-school teams who construct, implement, and operate their school-based detectors in coordination with physics professors, graduate students, and undergraduate physics and science-education majors. Two-year colleges and science museums are also potential detector sites.
Join us on February 2, 2013, for a day of discovery and hands-on activities throughout the museum with more than 20 stations staffed by UNL scientists, graduate and undergraduate students. UNL scientists and students will provide hands-on activities and demonstrations to engage visitors in scientific discovery. Topics include fossils, tsunamis, tornadoes, meteorites, microbes, drought, Antarctica and more. Children will have the opportunity to give a weather forecast like a meteorologist and dig for fossils like a paleontologist. Visitors are welcome to bring a rock or fossil for a scientist to identify.
Discover Engineering Days introduces middle school students and their teachers to the various fields in engineering and the engineering programs offered at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The event is hosted by the college's student organizations and is filled with hands-on activities that apply math, science and creative thinking skills.
Sr. High and Jr. EEW are one-week day camps comprised of mini-workshops for students entering grades 10-12 (Sr High EEW)or 8-9th grade (Jr.EEW) . The camps are held at The Peter Kiewit Institute (PKI) in Omaha, where participating students explore UNL engineering programs available on the Omaha Campus.

Sr. High EEW workshops are held in early June and Jr. EEW is held middle of July.
The Department of Entomology's open house is held in mid-September in Entomology Hall on East Campus. Come and meet the professors, the students, and the bugs! There will be laboratory tours, a fly tying demonstration, bionic bugs, information on pollinators and bedbugs, and a bee swarm demonstration (weather permitting).
Every Husker home game, Dr. Tim Gay attempts something as crazy as running against the NU defense: bringing physics to everyday life. In one-minute segments shown on the screens around the stadium, he talks about basic physics concepts that play an important role in the game of football.
National Robotics in 4-H: Workforce Skills for the 21st Century.
The project builds on and extends an existing research-based ITEST project, partnering with 4-H clubs across the U.S. to prepare middle school youth for the STEM workplace by developing and testing national curricula for use with a new educational robotics platform to introduce basic technology skills, foster problem solving and inquiry skills, and encourage teamwork.
The mission of the High Plains Regional Climate Center (HPRCC) is to increase the use and availability of climate data in the High Plains Region. HPRCC staff are committed to providing climate services to the public including: assisting the public in locating and accessing climate data/information and providing educational outreach to increase the awareness of climate and weather events.
Math Day stimulates interest in mathematics among Nebraska high school students, encourages them to pursue mathematics or mathematics-based science as a career and recognizes mathematical ability by awarding scholarships, certificates and trophies.
Outdoor adventure sports, working with animals, animal tracking, habitat restoration, nature exploration, and much more! The fee for camp is $150.
Activities and games will help visitors better understand Nebraska's rich natural resources and ways to help protect them through discovery and hands-on activities at stations staffed by the school's faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students.
The program is focused on 9th to 12th grade students who are attending Omaha North Magnet High School or Grand Island Senior High School. Students who qualify based on financial and academic criteria are required to complete a 4 year college prep program. Those who complete the program’s requirements are guaranteed financial aid to cover the full direct cost of attending the University of Nebraska.
Goal: To improve linkages between K-12 educators and Earth science resources.

Nebraska Association of Teachers of Science (NATS)
The Nebraska Invasive Species Project serves as a central hub for invasive species information. The project is designed to provide information to the public and private sector on invasive species issues through our website, newsletters, and activities at special events. We provide information including invasive species biology, monitoring and management methods, actual and potential maps of impact and risk, and invasive species news and events.
The Junior Academy was founded to promote scientific interest in the youth
of Nebraska. The Academy sponsors and annual competition for junior and senior high school students who present the results of their scientific research before a panel of judges. Winners of this competition receive their awards at the Academy's annual awards reception. The top 10 senior winners are eligible to attend the American Junior Academy of Sciences meeting which is held in conjunction with the American Association of Academies of Sciences meeting held every year in February.

This overnight retreat gives new engineering students a head start in their transition to college. N.U.B.E. camp provides incoming first-year students the opportunity to meet fellow classmates, faculty, and staff. There will be a variety of social and interactive team-building activities, and resourceful information given by current students, faculty, and staff.
Behlen Observatory is a research facility operated by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Physics and Astronomy. It is located in Mead, Nebraska approximately 38 miles northeast of Lincoln. It houses a 30-inch Cassegrain Reflector which is primarily used for variable star research.Several public night are held each year for when the 30-inch telescope is available for public viewing. Typically slide show talks, physics demonstrations, and the opportunity to look through smaller telescopes is offered as well. School groups may also arrange special tours schedules permitting.
Pest Scene Investigation is a youth program designed to teach children about pests and integrated pest management (IPM) by using forensic techniques similar to those seen on popular shows such as "CSI."
Concepts include:

* Capturing or deterring the culprit
Project Learning Tree (PLT) and Project WET are environmental education curriculums for PreK-12 grades. They are designed to help teachers meet educational standards by providing hands-on, inquiry based activities for students.
Project WILD is an environmental education curriculum for PreK-12 grades. It is designed to help teachers meet educational standards by providing hands-on, inquiry based activities for students.
During Saturday Science, the children spend two hours in the UNL Department of Physics and Astronomy for four consecutive Saturdays during the month of February. One hour is spent listening to a presentation by a university faculty member on a specific topic and then the students spend the second hour working in small groups where they conduct hands-on experiments related to the same concept(s). Each week the lab activities include at least one project that the students make and take home with them.
The Nebraska Junior Academy of Sciences was founded to promote scientific interest in the youth of Nebraska. Annually, junior and senior high students may register their research projects for entry in their corresponding regional science fair. The Southeast Regional Science Fair has two rounds of competition. In the first round judges select the top 15 junior high and the top 10 senior high students to continue to the second round. In the second round judges will select the top five junior and the top five senior high students to advance to the state science fair competition.
Mini-collections bring the museum to your classroom! Encounter kits are a great resource for educators. Kits are filled with furs, skulls, hands-on activities and the curriculum is correlated with educational standards. Kits available include Ancient Sea Life, Animal Detective, Birds, Dinosaurs, Elephant Trunk, Insect Investigations, Omaha, Ponca, Santee Sioux, and Winnebago.
This competition is designed for high school students across the United States as part of Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) and focuses on the areas of engineering, mathematics, science, and other related technical fields. The one-day open note and open discussion competition includes a multiple choice test and an essay portion. Schools from across Nebraska participate each year.
Weather Camp is a weeklong day camp for students who are ages 11-14 at the time of the camps. We have a picnic for our campers and their families followed by a program in Hardin Hall where awards will be given and campers will be able to showcase their activities from the weather camp week. During the week, campers will get to use instruments to make their own weather observations, meet forecasters at the National Weather Service, learn about the local weather of Nebraska from tornadoes to blizzards, visit the office of Emergency Management, learn about storm preparedness, learn about weather and climate related careers, and visit a TV weather studio to watch the news and weather live in the studio.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Water Center implements and facilitates water and water-related research, extension, teaching and public outreach programming within the University of Nebraska system as a part of NU’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and UNL’s School of Natural Resources.

For Nebraska high school women who want to explore their interest in science careers, interact with career and academic professional women in science and meet current women science students.
The UNL College of Engineering and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) invite all students in grades 9-12 to attend WIIE (Women Interested In Engineering) on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010. This program is designed to discuss opportunities available in engineering with an emphasis on females interested in engineering and science.
This sustainable, statewide program engages middle and high school students with STEM and promotes science literacy and STEM careers through 1) its flagship week-long residential summer science camps for MS (7th and 8th) and HS students (9th and 10th); and 2) summer research experiences for HS juniors and seniors.
